OD/ID Grinder / Cylindrical Grinder / Precision Grinding Technician

 

OD/ID Grinder / Cylindrical Grinder / Precision Grinding required to join a leading turbomachinery and coatings engineering company in Houston, TX.

 

The OD/ID Grinder will support the coatings and repair team by operating manual grinding machines to finish rotating equipment components including propulsion shafts, hydraulic rods, bearing journals, and other cylindrical surfaces. This is a precision-focused role that involves grinding chrome, carbide, and steel coatings to extremely tight tolerances (up to 0.0005") for high-spec rotating assemblies.

OD/ID Grinder / Cylindrical Grinder / Precision Grinding Role

  • Operate manual OD and ID grinding machines to rough and finish grind cylindrical components including shafts, sleeves, and journals
  • Work on rotating equipment such as centrifugal pump shafts, turbine rotors, bearing housings, and hydraulic rods
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, scope of work documents, and work instructions
  • Use precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, preset gauges) to measure and inspect tolerances to 0.0005"
  • Select appropriate abrasives, adjust machine feeds/speeds, and calculate tolerances as required
  • Diagnose and adjust machine performance or report maintenance issues
  • Use hoists and lifting equipment to safely load/unload heavy components
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, supporting shop-wide safety and efficiency standards

 

OD/ID Grinder / Cylindrical Grinder / Precision Grinding Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in grinding and/or machining (manual grinding experience preferred)
  • Prior experience working in a machine shop, rotating equipment service centre, or high-spec industrial repair environment
  • Strong understanding of grinding chrome, steel, or carbide coatings
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and use high-precision measurement tools
  • Mechanically inclined with attention to detail and safety awareness
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and physically capable of bending, kneeling, and standing for long periods
  • Comfortable working around metals including steel, copper, bronze, and aluminium
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or holidays as needed
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to pass required screenings for safety-critical projects
