Opportunity to step into a hands-on leadership role at a renewable, wood-fired biomass facility in Vermont.
This is a small team, high-impact environment where you’ll have real ownership of plant performance, people, and day-to-day operations.
Position Summary
The Operations Manager / Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a wood-fired biomass power plant.
Working closely with the Plant Manager, Maintenance team, and fuel suppliers, this role combines technical oversight with hands-on leadership to optimize plant performance, fuel usage, and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Operations
- Oversee day-to-day plant operations across control room and plant floor
- Lead and support Control Room Operators and Steam Plant Operators
- Act as the primary point of contact for shift teams, providing direction and technical support
- Monitor plant performance and troubleshoot operational issues to minimize downtime
- Manage fuel receiving, handling, and inventory to ensure consistent supply and quality
- Adjust operating parameters to optimize efficiency, output, and emissions compliance
Maintenance & Coordination
- Partner with Maintenance to plan and execute preventive and corrective work
- Support troubleshooting and coordinate vendor involvement when required
- Maintain accurate CMMS records for work orders, inspections, and logs
- Assist with outage planning and continuous improvement projects
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA and Vermont environmental regulations
- Lead safety meetings, drills, and incident investigations
- Maintain environmental reporting across emissions, permits, and water quality
Commercial & Administrative Support
- Support fuel cost tracking, budgeting, and inventory management
- Assist with operational reporting for internal and regulatory stakeholders
- Identify and implement improvements to enhance plant efficiency and reliability
Experience & Background
- 5+ years in biomass, power generation, or industrial plant operations
- 2+ years in a supervisory or leadership role
- Strong hands-on experience with boilers, steam turbines, or solid fuel systems
- Degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, or similar preferred (or equivalent experience)
