Engineer - Job Description Position Summary The Engineer at American Precision Engineering is responsible for leading the technical execution of customer projects from concept through final delivery. Engineers develop manufacturing strategies, create designs, optimize production processes, support fabrication and assembly, and continually improve the systems used to manufacture world-class products. Unlike traditional engineering positions, APE engineers remain actively involved throughout the manufacturing process. Engineers work alongside machinists, fabricators, inspectors, assemblers, and management to solve problems, improve processes, and ensure every project is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. An APE Engineer is expected to think beyond the design of the product and engineer the entire manufacturing process. Primary Responsibilities Design Engineering
Design mechanical components, weldments, assemblies, tooling, fixtures, and complete systems using SolidWorks.
Optimize customer designs for manufacturability, quality, cost, schedule, and reliability while maintaining required functionality.
Perform Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews and provide recommendations to customers when appropriate.
Develop tooling, fixtures, gauges, and assembly aids that improve productivity, quality, repeatability, and operator safety.
Develop engineering documentation that clearly communicates design intent and manufacturing requirements.
Manufacturing Engineering
Develop complete manufacturing plans for customer parts, assemblies, and systems. Develop manufacturing routings, work instructions, and production documentation. Define manufacturing sequences and production workflows to maximize efficiency while
minimizing cost, lead time, and risk. Develop inspection plans, identify required inspection points, and specify quality documentation
necessary to satisfy both APE and customer requirements. Define finishing, marking, packaging, and shipping requirements for customer products. Ensure manufacturing plans support safe, repeatable, and efficient production.
Manufacturing Support
Work directly with machinists, fabricators, welders, inspectors, and assemblers to support production and resolve technical issues.
Develop standardized machining and fabrication processes that reduce setup time, improve repeatability, and increase throughput.
Assist shop personnel with inspection activities throughout fabrication and assembly.

Develop and maintain inspection documentation, quality records, and acceptance criteria required by APE and customer specifications.
Support first article inspections, in-process inspections, final inspections, and customer acceptance activities.
Work with the Quality Department to resolve nonconformances and implement corrective actions.
Assembly & Technical Leadership
Serve as the technical lead on complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automated assembly projects.
Provide hands-on leadership during assembly, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and validation of complete systems.
Develop assembly procedures, test procedures, and system verification methods. Work directly with assembly technicians to resolve technical challenges and improve assembly
processes. Verify system functionality through testing and inspection prior to shipment. Support customer acceptance testing, commissioning, installation, and technical demonstrations
when required. Project Management
Manage the technical execution of assigned projects from engineering release through final delivery.
Track project schedules, engineering progress, manufacturing costs, and technical risks. Coordinate engineering activities with purchasing, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and
customers. Communicate project status, technical concerns, and recommended solutions to management
and customers. Balance functionality, manufacturability, quality, schedule, and cost throughout project
execution. Supplier & Outside Process Management
Coordinate with outside vendors for plating, anodizing, painting, powder coating, heat treating, machining, coating, inspection, and other specialty processes.
Ensure outside vendors understand engineering requirements and customer specifications. Verify outside processes meet quality and schedule requirements.
Continuous Improvement
Work within established APE engineering standards while continually improving them. Develop new engineering standards, templates, work instructions, and best practices that
improve company performance. Work with management to improve engineering systems, manufacturing processes, quality
systems, and business workflows. Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, throughput, organization, standardization, and
manufacturing efficiency. Participate in the development of new manufacturing technologies, tooling concepts, and
production methodologies.

Performance Expectations An APE Engineer is expected to:
Take complete ownership of assigned projects. Produce accurate, organized, and professional engineering documentation. Make engineering decisions that balance quality, cost, schedule, manufacturability, and
customer satisfaction. Work collaboratively with all departments to achieve project success. Spend time on the shop floor supporting production and learning from manufacturing. Maintain excellent communication with coworkers, customers, and suppliers. Respond quickly and effectively to technical issues. Continuously seek opportunities to improve products, processes, and company systems. Demonstrate sound engineering judgment while maintaining attention to detail. Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Strong mechanical design skills. Proficiency with SolidWorks. Experience with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, assembly, and manufacturing
processes. Understanding of GD&T and engineering drawings. Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles. Ability to design tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing processes. Strong project management and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Engineering Philosophy At American Precision Engineering, engineers do far more than design parts. They design manufacturing systems. Every engineering decision should improve the entire production process by reducing waste, improving safety, increasing quality, simplifying manufacturing, shortening lead times, and creating repeatable processes. Our Design-Thru-Fab philosophy places engineers directly alongside manufacturing. Engineers are expected to learn from production, continuously refine their designs, and build systems that make future work easier, faster, and more reliable. The success of an APE Engineer is measured not only by the quality of their designs, but by the success of the products, processes, and people they support.
